The Cincinnati plant, which produces North America glycerin products, including Superol KPO, Superol NK, and MOON-OU, received a grade A from the BRC committee for demonstrated commitment to food safety and improvement through food safety plans and quality management systems, site stands, product and process control and personnel.

From this mixture he extracted a sweet liquid and named it “sweet oil.” In 1811, Chevreul, a Frenchman, gave the material the name glycerin, which is Greek for ”sweet.” Due to its high cost, very little was done with glycerin—apart from using it in personal applications—until 1868, when the great Swedish scientist Alfred Nobel discovered the value of nitroglycerine as an explosive. The first patent for recovering glycerin from soap lye was issued in the U.S. in 1870. In 1904, P&G implemented the principles that underlie the glycerin recovery process still in use today.

At the turn of the twentieth century, glycerin was a little-known, little-appreciated byproduct of soap and candle manufacturing. Sizeable quantities went into dynamite and other explosives, patent medicines from traveling hawkers used almost as much, and drug stores sold a little as hand lotion. It took two world wars and the intervening years of innovation and research to give glycerin its current place in the spotlight. Today it is one of the most versatile products available in the oleochemicals industry.
