As I take in the “view from my virtual corner office,” I’m reminded that the only constant for us all is change and we navigate it best when we hold true to our shared values, principles and commitments. At P&G Chemicals, this remains our north star and our inspiration, guiding us to negotiate the challenges ahead and seize the opportunities they bring.
As an engineer by training (and at heart), I’m comfortable in a world driven by fluid dynamics and multivariable impact factors. I know that any good “design of experiment (DOX)” takes all of these “forces” into account while remaining focused on deepening understanding and positive outcomes. This allows us to focus on long-term growth while delivering on our everyday service commitments. It helps us balance optimism and pragmatism to ensure our people (and partners) feel empowered and comfortable through any challenge.
So, what are the three top things on my mind right now in a world that seems to turn and change faster than ever?
1. Embrace Volatility and Change as a Reality
When VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity) first emerged as a concept in the ’80s and ’90s, it felt new and different and a phase that we hoped would soon pass. Now we recognize that VUCA is just another way of saying “everyday reality,” especially in the world of global supply chains and oleochemicals.
From weather patterns that directly impact harvest yields or availability of tropical oils (like coconut or palm oil) and consequently drive prices up or down to political, social and economic factors, it is imperative to develop long-term plans as well as to respond with speed. It’s this ability to navigate change quickly and thoughtfully – while always maintaining our focus on our shared goals – that makes a meaningful difference.
Whether it’s brought to life through our expertise managing oil mixes, adaptable logistics that allow us to pivot quickly or our global-local supply network, we can deliver on our promise to our customers every time.
2. Bio-Based, Responsibly Produced Products Pack a Powerful PunchAs part of a leading global consumer goods company, Procter & Gamble, we know that our retail customers and consumers are looking for irresistibly superior sustainable products. At P&G Chemicals, our commitment to responsibly sourced natural feedstocks, implementation of sustainable manufacturing improvements, and delivery of low carbon, bio-based solutions enable us to effectively meet the needs of both P&G and our B2B customers.
Our recent participation in key industry conferences – such as the American Cleaning Institute (ACI) in the U.S., the Palm & Lauric Oils Price Outlook Conference (POC) in Asia, and In-Cosmetics in Europe – has highlighted the growing interest among our partners for sustainable solutions. While companies may currently be at different stages of their sustainability journeys, it is evident that many are seeking to embrace this path. Our commitment is to walk alongside our partners – offering the support needed as they navigate this important transition.
3. Science-Based, Robustly Credentialed is a Differentiator that Drives TrustAs a 160-year veteran of the oleochemicals sector, P&G Chemicals has seen and (dare I say it) done it all. But I’m reminded again and again that science and credibility never go out of fashion. This year has been an exciting one as we’ve ramped up and launched a new portfolio of low carbon solutions. As I’ve spoken to our customers around the world, I’ve heard time and again that they want to understand not only what products we offer but our creation process, the scientific basis for our Life Cycle Assessment, and whether our footprints are credibly reviewed and verified. This is why I am proud of our scientists and engineers as well as the insights they brought to the certification and verification we achieved with TÜV Rheinland.
Looking ahead, I’m realistic: “change” is here to stay and embracing it is the best way forward. We know that the oleochemical industry is complex but with complexity comes opportunity. We look forward to talking more with you (our customers, suppliers and stakeholders) to shape these changes moving forward. Thank you for your ongoing trust and partnership.
