As a PhD scientist and Product Stewardship Leader at P&G for over two and a half decades, I have had the unique privilege of being part of the evolving sustainability journey both scientifically and commercially. Early conversations often tended to be centered on pure science or advocacy. Over time, business leaders and marketers entered the dialogue, bringing a strong focus on consumer needs and opportunities. We made progress, but sustainability too often remained an “and”, an “or” or “niche add-on” — rather than being fully integrated from the start to have the greatest impact.
At P&G Chemicals, we believe in changing that narrative. We view sustainability not as a separate initiative, but as a powerful catalyst for business value and growth. It’s a cornerstone for building trust with our customers and stakeholders — and it runs deep, creating resilient, compliant, and robust bio-based supply chains. This is why I take great pride in being part of a team where sustainability is not merely theoretical or simply a number on a report; it’s genuinely built-in, not just bolted-on.
What does this mean in practice? How do we embed sustainability into everything we do and how will this continue to shift the conversation.
Science-Based, Business-Focused
Scientific rigor remains non-negotiable for us. But with a focus on ensuring our data is meaningful and actionable — translating insights into tangible business impact. Our product stewardship teams don’t work in silos. Instead, they ask: What’s the ROI behind the data? What insights do our customers need to make confident, informed decisions? How can understanding external trends help actively shape our strategic choices?
Investing in Expertise, Driving Commercial Impact
We’ve made a deliberate investment in deep expertise — spanning bio-based supply chains, life cycle analysis (LCA), regulatory frameworks, advanced science and collaborative partnerships. Our scientists aren’t siloed in ivory towers; they’re integrated into day-to-day business thinking. This integration ensures that sustainability is built into innovation from the start. It enables us to work with our customers to co-develop solutions and unlock new opportunities together.
Building Sustainability Fluency Across the Organization
Sustainability fluency isn’t about turning everyone into an expert — it’s about fostering a shared understanding and ensuring data is leveraged meaningfully across the business. That’s why my team provides comprehensive training throughout the organization, empowering our commercial partners so they are ready and able to better serve our customers’ evolving sustainability needs.
Bringing the Outside-Inside
Engagement beyond our walls is crucial. By actively participating in organizations like Together for Sustainability (TfS), the American Cleaning Institute (ACI), and the Centre for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES), we continually sharpen our expertise. These partnerships bring valuable external perspectives into our daily decision-making, helping us align with credible standards, anticipate regulatory changes, and foster collaboration across the value chain.
What does this mean for our customers and partners?
It means access to a robust Bio-Based Science Portfolio informed by deep sustainable thinking integrated from the start. It means solutions that evolve in step with customer needs — supported by credible, transparent data that empowers confident decision-making in both internal processes and external reporting.
At P&G Chemicals, sustainability is more than a goal — it’s embedded in who we are and how we grow. And, for us, that makes all the difference. We look forward to partnering and supporting you on your sustainability journey.
